What I Do
I’m John Singleton, a self-taught woodturner and the artist behind JC’s Creative Woodworking in West Michigan. I specialize in one-of-a-kind pieces from burls and highly figured wood, working primarily with locally sourced hardwoods and sustainably farmed Australian wood.
Using a lathe and hand-carving techniques, I let the natural character of each piece guide the final form. Unusual grain, live edges, voids and imperfections aren’t flaws to hide. I give them particular attention, allowing them to become part of the beauty and character of the finished piece—a quiet reflection of the beauty that can be found in imperfection.
I avoid artificial stains and colors, occasionally incorporating epoxy or ground stone, such as turquoise, to complement what is already present in the wood. My philosophy is simple: let the wood speak for itself. Each bowl, vessel, or sculptural piece is shaped to reveal the extraordinary grain, figure and natural character already hidden within each unique piece of wood.
